Puzzle the knit...

"Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” - Maria Robinson

Looks like another cold blast is coming our way on the East Coast and in the Northern US. You may enjoy staying warm and cozy with some knitting brain teasers, word play opportunities and puzzles.  Here are a few places to find them.  Some are free and online so you can start right away.

Valentine's Day Simplicity Every Day...free patterns

Assorted pot holders from my kitchen.

“Three Rules of Work: Out of clutter find simplicity; From discord find harmony; In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”Albert Einstein

Knit, woven and crocheted hot pads or potholders can really brighten your winter kitchen and elevate your mood daily.  They can be simple or intricate, stuffed with batting or backed with another pad in another color.  No matter the size, shape, or finishing techniques, you will grow to love them for their simplicity, functionality, and subtle charm.  Some days you'll be drawn to bright and funky colorways, and others, you'll reach for the blues and greens that calm you after a hectic day.

I've included some of the potholders I've made over the years and still use every day in my kitchen above.  A few of them are projects I've rec'd from other crafters as Craft It Forward items.  They are the ones I cherish the most.  The simple act of creating something wonderful and sending it out into the world to inspire another is one of the things I love most about knitting, crochet and other crafts.

Many times I use my project gauge swatches made with worsted acrylic or cotton for potholders.  A simple knit or crochet trim makes a nice finish.  Please don't dismiss these lovely accessories.  If you're new to knitting or crochet, they are wonderful projects to help you practice tension and gauge, try new stitches with no worries, and learn how to join different colors of yarn to your project.  They're a wonderful portable project to take along anywhere you have to wait, ride, or need a creative break.

Below are some of my favorite free knit or crochet patterns for potholders from LionBrand.com.

Nifty needle arts & super knitting connections

It's events central this year...and yes I just posted about events yesterday, but I can't help myself.  Please indulge me...

Rocky Mountain Sew Expo - Feb 3-5 in Denver, CO
Near Denver?  Many of you knit and sew, quilt, embroider, etc.  If you're like me, you just really love all the new fabrics and needlearts. Do you drool over lush threads, colors, fabrics and accessories? This event is definitely for you.

Now I know you're thinking...did she say sewing?  That's not knitting!  Would I disappoint the knitters? - naaah

Knitter's Connection is back in 2011 with all the delicious fibers, vendors, classes and soooo much more.  Get the scoop and start making plans to visit Columbus, OH June 15-18, 2011.  It's air-conditioned, roomy and always well organized. Great classes and the market is to die for.  Did I just say that?  Wow, I must be super excited.

I just love needlearts.

knitting around the world...

Have a look at some of the coverage of knitting by the BBC.

The town of Cardigan receives a giant knitted present

Cosy knitwear for rescued chickens in East Sussex

Thousands of scarves knitted in cancer charity campaign

Palestinians earn a living making Jewish skullcaps

Scarf of Hope to remember Peru's missing

Knitted union jack flag for Rifleman William Aldridge

Berriew knitters make teddies for child 999 patients

Thank you BBC for such wonderful coverage of knitting.

It's a small knitting world.  Enjoy!

Winterize your family with hoodies! - free knit pattern roundup.

I absolutely loved this award winning indie documentary film by Vanessa Gould.  (Peabody Award 2010) It totally satisfied my geeky desire for the art of origami, to meet science, and math. You don't need to be an origami aficionado to appreciate this exploration of the art form and it's applications in math and science.  Open your mind to the possibilities...if you're a Netflix fan, you can also find it there.

Get the buzz. . .

Today, I'd like to give a big thanks and a hug to Teresita Valadez of Hearts of Love on Ravelry.com for her wonderful Knitting Members Cozy Corner and Anchors Away News of the Day posts about Knit Knitavian Style.  Teresita and the group are the featured Ravelry charity in the book. Teresita had not seen the galley's before her book arrived.  I was delighted to see that Teresita really took time to go over the entire book and enjoyed not only the cover, patterns, articles, and interviews, but the true message of joy, love, and inspiration that is a big part of what I was trying to accomplish with this project.

The most valuable lesson I learned from this entire process, which consumed a little over a year of my life, is that no matter what the obstacles, challenges, disappointments and unexpected setbacks, the true message of the hard work and creativity shine through in the end.  I raise my needles to all of you who get the message and am thankful to all the wonderful people who have stepped forward to contribute, help, console, consult, become Joyful Knitters and be a part of the adventure.

If you're struggling with your creative project right now, take a moment to whisper...I'm ready for my helpers to come forward. You might also want to try my all time favorite. Send help now!  Keep your sense of humor, enjoy your friends, hold your creative head high and be grateful for all you've accomplished.

Works every time.

boyfriend seeking hat . . .

©Margaret Nock, 2010.  All rights reserved.
Life of a knitter department:

I received a special request from my husband's college aged daughter to make a hat for the boyfriend.  He wanted a hat like the improvised one I made for her, only in black and white.  Roxy's styling the new hat for you - the boyfriend is out of state, so I wasn't able to get him to model it.  Hopefully, he'll receive it just in time for the next winter blast and enjoy wearing it.

That's all for now - I'm going back to the playoffs.
Go Steelers!
