Knit, Prance and Enjoy Your Free Pattern

Discovering joy in your life can be extremely difficult with all the stress we have in our daily lives. Today, for me, however,was not one of those days. After work, I decided to take the dogs out for a walk in the brisk air. They tromped through large dry leaves on the ground, rubbed their noses in who knows what, and basically had the time of their lives. I was laughing and feeling the joy they were emitting from their little bodies. They reminded me of the powerful lesson to find joy in life. You may have to look around, but it's there for you. Take just one minute to "prance like a yorkie" and I guarantee you'll giggle from this dog eyed perspective of the world.

To celebrate autumn, I have a special free pattern for you to celebrate this season of gratitude. Many of you have emailed asking for a scarf pattern to go along with the WowzaWristWarmers from Knit 1 for the Road pattern book. Here it is...my autumn gift to you, the Autumn Wowza Scarf. It's warm, soft and perfect for chilly weather.

Autumn Wowza Scarf

This is a companion piece for the Wowza Wrist Warmers from Knit 1 for the Road pattern book.

Materials:

1 ball Lion Brand Yarn, Wool Ease, worsted weight, 123 Seaspray, 80% acrylic, 20% wool, 3 ozs, 85 gms, 197 yrds, 180 meters

Size 8.0 (5.0mm) US Needles

Stitch Markers, Measuring Tape, Tapestry Needle, Scissors

Suggested Manufacturer's Gauge is 4” x 4”, 18 sts and 24 rows

Note: The original wrist warmer pattern was made with Filatura Di Crosa, 127 print 43, 50 gms, 92 yds, 100% wool on the same size needle. If you’re using this yarn you will need 2 balls.

Cast on 33 stitches

Ribbing

Row 1 K2, P2 across row and knit the last stitch
Row 2 Same as row 1.

Continue these 2 rows for 2”

Next

Row 3 K1, P1, Knit across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.
Row 4 K1, P1, Purl across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.


Next Row starts the four rows of your pattern

Pattern Rows

Row 1 K1, P1, Knit across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.

Row 2 K1,P 1, Purl across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.

Row 3 K1, P1, K5, P3, K5, last two stitches K1, P1.

Row 4 K1, P1, Purl across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.

Repeat these 4 pattern rows for 34” or desired length.

Next,

K1, P1, Knit across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.

Next Row

K1, P1, Purl across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.

Repeat Ribbing for 2”

Bind off in pattern. Weave in all ends.Total length was 38”.

Block if necessary.

Blocking method that I used:

I sprayed the scarf with tepid water, placed on the ironing board and used an ironing cloth or a cloth you have on hand (very important) over the scarf and lightly ironed over the scarf with a low heat. After ironing, I placed it flat on a towel to dry completely where it would be undisturbed.

You can also use a rust proof pin and lay flat on a blocking mat, board or towel and dry overnight if you don't feel comfortable using and iron.

KNITTY TEENS AND TWEENS...

It's almost summer and time for teens and tweens to dive into summer fun, new projects, and family outings. A great way to share your love of knitting or crochet with your child is to join in a knitting/crochet group in your area and share the joy of knitty community. If you're looking for a group, here are two sites to help you learn about what is available in your area. LionBrandYarn offers a group finder as well as Knitmap. I've noticed flyers in the local knitting and craft stores, community centers and libraries with summer lessons and groups for HIP teens and tweens as well as younger children. Many are free or only cost for supplies.

There are also many hip teen/tween books available regarding knitting and crochet with wonderful patterns teens really want to make.

Your teen/tween will thank you - eventually...probably when they are grown and have children of their own, but good things are worth waiting for.

Inauguration Day is getting close. Do you need some crafty ideas and recipes for the big day? Crafting (and a little history prep) can help teach your children all about democacy in action. NEW YEAR KNITTING RESOLUTIONS

Here are a few suggestions for you to consider when thinking about your knitting or crochet future in 09. Think about where you may need more work or maybe more courage in regards to your knitting skills or projects. You may be surprised with what you come up with and the result of your efforts.

1. Always knit a gauge when required. (hard one, I know)

2. Find time to knit or crochet for charity. (difficult but extremely worthwhile to not only the one you help, but also your mind and spirit)

3. Take control of the stash! (this one stays on the list every year!)

4. Dedicate some time each week or month to share knitting projects, skills, or advice. (Easy and fun!)

5. Study new techniques and try to make at least one major knitting event each year and encourage other knitters you know to come along. (FUUUUN)

6. Check out your local yarn and craft stores for classes and free groups to join in the community. (inspiring)

7. DARE to knit in public! (adventurous and fun to document-pics or journal- for yourself or blog)

8. Listen to podcasts (relaxing and informative) Visit knit1fortheroad.com for suggestions.

9. Join an internet community for support. (like Ravelry.com.)

10. Try to enjoy the process and any happy accidents that are included in that process.


11. Document your projects by keeping a knitting journal online or on paper and include digital photos, pattern and gauge swatch.

12. Look for inspiration around you for colors, textures, or patterns that you might want to incorporate into your knitting. These ideas can also be documented for future use.

Some new things for this blog in 09 will be more interviews with knitters, business people involved in the knitting/crochet world, Etsy artists, and people who will inspire you to make a difference with your knitting.

More knitting lessons, tips, and info being added to the blog and also to www.knit1fortheroad.com. Another book is in the works and there will be a giveaway or two. You are also encouraged to send in your finished Knit 1 for the Road patterns (in the book and from my Etsy shop, margknittinaround) and any of the Knit/Crochet Along projects for charity. You may send them to knit1fortheroad@gmail.com and I will post them on the Knit 1 for the Road gallery. This is a great way to share your creativity with others. The next knit/crochet along will be announed Janurary 09 - stay tuned!

HAVE YOUR CAKE AND KNIT TOO!

Sometimes we know there are handy knitting tools out there that will enhance are knitting and our lives, but for some reason, we get by without them due to cost or lack of space. When I began knitting, I coasted along without these tools and got by. Lately, however, I find I need to remove unecessary frustration and condense my knitting prep and finishing time and make it all more efficient. So here they are and I hope they help you with your knitting time management.
Ever find knots or get knots in your yarn while knitting? A ball winder helps you keep your yarn knot free and condenses your skein into a cake to help you zip along...and there are just sometimes you want to be zippy!

HANKS got you down? Check out using an umbrella swift. Many yarn stores will have one on hand or you can purchase your own if you're hard core ;). You can also hang your hank over the back of a dining chair or get a helper but isn't this soooo much cooler! I don't know about your house, but a hank signals the pets to gather 'round for great fun!

Do you have a pattern or chart that is a little difficult and requires more concentration than usual? I find this gadget (a great tool for any needleart) I like this chart holder that folds up and fits in your purse or tote. I use mine all the time for knitting on the run.

Working on getting pics loaded to the computer for you - so far, my computer is having what my husbands' daughters used to call an "opposite day". A game they used to play to keep adults out of the kid loop by declaring "OPPOSITE DAY!" and proceeding to do the opposite of whatever they were asked. Yes, it was annoying at times, but you have to admire their sense of playfulness and humor.

FINDING YOUR KNITTING VOICE

Searching for your knitting voice is an ongoing evolutionary journey with many ups and downs - just like life. Staying on the ride is the assignment and learning to make mistakes along the way. Rip-Knit-Rip-Knit but eventually you work through it and come to the RAINBOW side of a wonderfully constructed and knitted project - hooray!

Ravelry knows this and invites us to share our knitting tales of woe with others in the community as this is part of the creative process. It's a wonderful group of people from all the yarnie and fiber disciplines together in one community. If you have not joined this community, please go to Ravelry.com and look at the profile page. The community is growing, as are the dynamic groups and forums that you can participate in.
