A little something to consider:

Here's a great example from Sarah at CrochetMe how substituting yarn different than the one in your pattern can change your knit or crochet project. Adventures in Yarn Substitution: A Cautionary Tale.

Knitty.com also has valuable info on this subject by Jenna Wilson: Thinking beyond the pattern
...a field guide to yarn substitutions

Knittingbrain has even more info to consider when substituting yarn.

I hope this helps clear up some of the mystery of substituting yarn.

Two resources that I use are Standards and Guidelines for Crochet and Knitting at the Craft Yarn Council.
and Yarndex.com.  You can also ask for help at your LYS (local yarn shop) or knitting or crochet group.Updates:

Signed copies of Knit Knitavian Style: Allow your knitting adventures to begin. are available in my Etsy shop, margknittinaround.  I also have patterns, kits, hand made items and more will be added soon.

Another groovy giveaway day is coming Tuesday.

I've been busy interviewing some very crafty people at Creating The Hive, the new online crafting community, and will be posting them here on this blog.

Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Festival is coming to D.C. Oct. 2.  I'll be there signing books at the Knit Outta the BoxBooth, thanks to the generosity of Laurie Gonyea.  I'll have more info about for you soon.  If you're in the area, please support this wonderful event.  There are so many talented people there every year.

Alrighty!  The dogs are at the groomer and it's time to dance around as if no one is watching, knit a little, and enjoy a good cup of coffee.
