MATSURI MODIFIED MADNESS

Stash-A-Roo!
Today I'd like to share what's on my needles with you. The Matsuri Scarf pattern came from a kit I found at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival over the summer. The original scarf was made with 34 sts and US size 10 knitting needles.

Original Matsuri Scarf
I found some skeins of Patons Nuance and decided to make a couple for presents. Looking at the simple pattern, and considering the type of yarn I was using I decided to knit only 19 sts on larger needles (US Size 13 (9.0mm) and here's the result.

Modifying one of your favorite patterns is a great way to practice your gauge skills and creativity. Sometimes switching yarn and needles gives you a different look. I basically counted the stitches in my original pattern for each pattern row and adapted it At first I tried dividing it in half, but it needed two extra sitches (one on each end) to look more finished. Looking at the original scarf and knitting a gauge helped me to decide exactly what I needed. It also helps to reinforce those math skills. GAUGE is important to the process and why it's encouraged for most projects.

HAVE YOUR CAKE AND KNIT TOO!

Sometimes we know there are handy knitting tools out there that will enhance are knitting and our lives, but for some reason, we get by without them due to cost or lack of space. When I began knitting, I coasted along without these tools and got by. Lately, however, I find I need to remove unecessary frustration and condense my knitting prep and finishing time and make it all more efficient. So here they are and I hope they help you with your knitting time management.
Ever find knots or get knots in your yarn while knitting? A ball winder helps you keep your yarn knot free and condenses your skein into a cake to help you zip along...and there are just sometimes you want to be zippy!

HANKS got you down? Check out using an umbrella swift. Many yarn stores will have one on hand or you can purchase your own if you're hard core ;). You can also hang your hank over the back of a dining chair or get a helper but isn't this soooo much cooler! I don't know about your house, but a hank signals the pets to gather 'round for great fun!

Do you have a pattern or chart that is a little difficult and requires more concentration than usual? I find this gadget (a great tool for any needleart) I like this chart holder that folds up and fits in your purse or tote. I use mine all the time for knitting on the run.

KnitPicks has all of these products in stock. Shop around, find out what your local yarn stores have available, compare cost and you will be able to stay within the knitty budget that we all set out to keep come Jan 1...but seldom do!

FEROCIOUS BACKPACKS, BAGS and BIRTHDAY!

Here I am! Blogging a little late today, on my birthday - still giddy from the fun, quick interview on the Jack E. Jett radio talk show Saturday.

Thank you for all the wonderful birthday wishes. You guys and gals are soooo awesome!

Over the weekend, I found a couple of sites that you're going to want to check out. Purlpod Backpacks by Elizabeth Garson are so adorable and roomy...and talk about fun colors. The Metallics Line is definitely for the fashionista side of your knitting personality.

The Namaste Collection offers the knitter durable knitting bags, needle cases, and messenger totes in various styles in different price ranges. I have indulged in a couple of these bags and have gotten a lot of wear out of them.

That's all for now - I'll be back to my knittin' self tomorrow...no more birthday schenanigans for me.

ROCK THE KNIT/CROCHET!

A couple of new issues just out will leave you inspired and ready to Rock the Knit and Crochet!

knitsimple (Holiday 08) issue is pretty in pink with really fast, fun patterns. You will want to check out knits+that section on pages 6 and 8 for the latest gizmos for the happy knitter and hooker. There is something for everyone in this issue, including adorable sweaters, hats and bags for the kids! Great fun in this issue.

Belle Armoire Art to Wear (Sept/Oct 08) always leaves me breathless. Crocheters will be delighted and doin' the happy dance over this issue which includes an incredible interview with Susan Obrant starting on page 11 and an array of inspiring quotes regarding her process, crochet and gorgeous designs that are colorful, edgy, and fabulous!

It's back to nature in an article by Jess Nichole - Nature's Enchanted Whimsy, an Eco Chic Halter Dress design and so much more. There are also other crafts included in the issue, although I definitely consider the whole issue art.

I hope you will reach for these issues on the stand or order them online and be taken to another world of knitting, crochet, art, crafts - basically nirvana for your creative side.

CRAFT GOSSIP SCOOP!

I'm thrilled to see Knit 1 for the Road on Craft Gossip Knitting!!! Terrye Kinch, the Editor, was kind enough to review the book on her awesome knitting page. You will find this review and much more on Knitting. Terrye brings us knitting news with humor, exuberance and flair!

Working on getting pics loaded to the computer for you - so far, my computer is having what my husbands' daughters used to call an "opposite day". A game they used to play to keep adults out of the kid loop by declaring "OPPOSITE DAY!" and proceeding to do the opposite of whatever they were asked. Yes, it was annoying at times, but you have to admire their sense of playfulness and humor.

HAPPY OPPOSITE DAY TO YOU and I hope you DON'T KNIT-DON'T SHARE- DON'T GO! ;)

KNITTERS IN POLITICS

Knitting, Politics, and Trading Markets.com!?!

During the past couple of weeks, I have been pondering the political side of knitting and it's long history in our nation. I came across this article and thought you might be interested.

Discover how KNITTERS express their passion for knitting and politics in this article on Trading Markets.com. I know! Who knew a financial site was aware of political knitting? It was written pre-acceptance speeches but is still relevant...and you might find it interesting. The article also mentions Ravelry and a few of the groups actively knitting for their candidates.

Enjoy!

CRAFTY CRUISIN'

Bookmark and Share

Need a knitting escape? Think of it - a whole block of time devoted to cruisin' and knitting. Meeting new knitties, learning new techniques and enjoying a new environment away from your day to day digs. How wonderful is that? I daydream of such things from time to time when life gets hectic and knitting time is on the slim side. I prefer my clothes to be on the slim side and my knit/crochet/craft time to be on the FAT side!

Cost is always a consideration, but if we plan ahead and save our money in that first irregular sock we knitted or crocheted, perhaps it is obtainable afterall. Remember when we were kids saving for the ultimate toy or bike? We eventually got there. Some things are definitely worth waiting for.

To put you in cruise mode - here's a site to help your dreams become knitting reality.

Craft Cruises A list of available craft cruises AND general information.

Land options are also available. Maybe your local yarn shop is interested and you can get a group rate.

Check with a local travel agent and find out more about this crafty way to cruise! Grab your needles, yarn and Knit-Share-Go! (and you thought I was going to say BonVoyage or Ahoy!)
