Chemo Caps made with LionBrand Cotton Ease

Over the New Year holiday weekend,  I was able to whip up a few chemo caps with LionBrand Cotton Ease.  I found it delightful to crochet with, surprisingly soft and definitely durable.  There's a wide range of colors, which is always a plus for any knitter or knotter. It's 50% cotton and 50% acrylic and falls into the weight category of 4, medium worsted weight which makes it an excellent all year round yarn. If you're making chemo caps and would like to use this yarn, please check with you're  organization's yarn list first, to make sure it's an approved yarn.

Empowering Stitches

Recently, I had the opportunity to see the painting Senninbari (Thousand Stitches) by Henry Sugimoto.  I became overwhelmed by the vision of the female offering a Senninbari (a scarf of rememberance) to a Nisei soldier. 
A thousand stitches created by 1,000 women. Imagine it.  Talk about stitching with intent.  These scarves (or belts) were worn by soldiers as amulets and a rememberance of the women back home.  The custom originated during the first Sino-Japanese war and they were also seen a few years ago in the movie Letters from Iwo Jima. 

The stitches we make, (in all types of needlework) are empowering, much like a prayer - or a thought.  Gather 1,000 and you've got something wonderful.  We can create and enjoy them, pass them forward and continue to create a better world.

Think of your  little stitches today and become empowered. Remember to stitch with intent this week and bask in the glow.

Adventures of a Sock Monkey Visionary!

You may wonder what brings me to the blog-a-roo on Saturday evening but I'm so inspired I have to share.  Today, we braved the cold to visit Baltimore's American Visionary Art Museum.  It's the only Visionary museum in the U.S. and boy is it well worth the visit!  This year's theme is Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness.  There is just about every material you can image used to create many of the pieces - including yarn - yes yarn - Yay!  There are paintings, illustrations, carvings, a metal sculpture garden and barn. Most of the work is created by unknown or little known artists and regular people who don't claim to be artists at all, but are self taught from around the world with a true vision all their own.  It's a wonderful place to rediscover human history.  There are expressive, funny and sometimes quirky pieces, expertly crafted. 


Two of my favorite artists were Judith Scott with her yarn cocoon and Deborah Berger's masks and knitted pieces which were rescued twice, once after the family put them in the trash after her death, and miraculously after Katrina, and were finally donated to the museum.


If you're near Baltimore and have never been to the AVAM, do go and visit.  Check their events page and bookmark the ANNUAL KINETIC SCULPTURE RACE.



Every turn is filled with dreams, ideas, and talented people.  You will be inspired.


On the way out, I had to visit the gift shop and I found Sock Monkey Dreams, daily life at the red heel monkey shelter by Whitney Shroyer and Letitia Walker.  If you have serous sock monkey love grab it for your library.  You will seriously dig this one.

New year, new knitting resolutions!

It's that time again!  That's right knitties, time for some more knitting resolutions.  These also apply to crafties, yarnies and hooksters of the crochet variety.

Take it away!

1.  Discover a new charity to make items for.  Check out Ravelry groups, visit knit1fortheroad.com for reliable charities and other sources you trust.  There are so many people in need this year, don't miss out on an opportunity to use your crafty talents to help.

2.  Meet other people who like to do similar crafts and enjoy the community online and in your local area.  These friendships can last for years and help you grow as a knitter and crafter.

3.  Support handmade artists and spread the word. 

4.  Recycle, reuse, upcycle and celebrate the Earth whenever possible.  Choose eco-friendly materials and always do your homework on how you can improve your efforts to go green.

5.  Economize your crafting materials so you don't end up on late night debt consolidations spots (knitting in shadow, of course).  You will save yourself unhappy feelings in 2010.

6.  Any hoarders out there?  I know, I'm guilty too.  This is the toughest of all for some of us.  Try donating the yarn you know good and well you won't be using or haven't used in a long time.  Let it go---give it a chance for a new life...it's stuffy in that plastic container in the back of the closet.

7. Organize! Yes, another tough one for for some of us.  No. 6 will help you get a great start.  Try sorting, plastic containers, great eco-friendly project bags, or any other orgainizing method that fits your lifestyle.

8.  Invest in a few books and magazines that will help inspire you.  Online and digital are great ways to do this.  Only invest in hardback books or paperback books that are unique and ones you will want in your library for a long time.  There is something wonderful about holding them and flipping the pages, I admit, but going paperless is also wonderful, saving you space, money, and a few trees.

9.  Make your crafting place your own.  Set up an area just for you with all your materials just the way you like them and make it off limits to pets, children, and spouses.  You deserve this space!

10.  Last one, but an important one to keep in mind.  Turn to your needlework or crafting whenever you feel tired, lonely, or just plain bummed out (do people even say that anymore?)  It will help relax, rejuvenate and allow your creativity shine through but warn your friends and family they may want to grab a really cool pair of shades to shield them from your glow.

I know you're going to create wonderful projects in 2010 and remember to craft with intent, helping to make the world a better place because you're in it.

Owl-licious Baby Bib

Today it's all about this adorable bib from Jenny Hart's  Baby Bib EmbroideryKit:Tools and Techniques for Uttterly Adorable Projects. 

 

A friend of mine is having her first baby and this seemed to be the perfect time for an embroidery project.  The kit includes all the fixin's (except for the embroidery hoop which is optional)  There are several adorable transfers, thread, needle, and two bibs.  Soooo cute!  Instructions are included - do read them before starting the project.  Jenny includes expert advice to help you get excellent results.

This is a wonderful project to try, and a way to break away from your usual type of needlework.  We all love our knitting, but after making so many handmade knit and crochet presents this year, I needed a change.

Are you an East Coaster? If so, you probably experienced a lot of snow and chilly weather this weekend and today is the first official day of winter.  When you're done shoveling, playing with the kids, and drying off with a cup of cocoa, it's time to get down to some serious needlework of choice.

This weekend, I finally got a chance to start my socks for the KAL (Knit-Along) with Rachel-Marie (knittydirtygirl) Ravelry group. I went old school starting at the top and not the toe with this one and improvised so there is no real printed pattern.

There's nothing like making items for other people, but sometimes you long to join in community and KAL's are a great way to do that.  Push yourself to try new patterns and explore new shapes to make.  You will be surprised how quickly you will improve your skills.  Ask questions, post comments, and see what every one else is doing as you knit along.  You may even discover a new yarn choice.  Check Ravelry groups, forums, and online at your favorite yarn stores.  If your lucky enough to have a group near you, and/or a local yarn store - join in!  I've also seen groups form at some of the major craft stores, so don't rule them out. 

Break out of your snow coma - it's sunny in SockCity, KnitCity, and KALTown.

A rainy weekend is the perfect time to work on projects that you've really wantd to do, but haven't had the time. It's almost as good as a day at the spa and all the chocolate you can eat, isn't it? Maybe better!

Here are a few projects that I worked on and thought you might like a peek. Drum roll, please!

Packages wrapped with vintage, recycled and reusable paper, fabric and crafty pendants, buttons and other items that can be reused.

Presents are gettnig wrapped today to send in the mail. Everything was wrapped in vintage, recycled, upcycled, reused items from Etsy or crafty things that I had on hand. Most of the presents were purchased on Etsy or handmade from patterns in my own Etsy shop, margknittinaround making this one of the most handmade, eco-friendly holidays so far. I chose non-traditional colors rather than the usual green and red and incorparated the handmade theme with owls and butterflies for a more hipster.

In search of the oldest knit artifact...

Lately, I've been surrounded with reminders of history. The oldest community theater in the US, the oldest structures in the state, and on and on and it made me wonder what is the oldest knit artifact in the world? I found two articles that were helpful and thought you might enjoy reading them too.
