SOUL FOOD FOR KNITTERS...

Bookmark and Share
The beautiful Fall 08 issue of Rowan is out and on Webs. I consider this a luxury buy and was lucky enough to find some issues for only $5 during the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival. The issues were from 07, but I find that the classic shapes and designs in their pattern books are timeless. You as the reader, and viewer are taken to another world, a very artistic, rich, mouthwatering knitting paradise. Knitting nirvana for sure, no matter which issue you pick.

I hope you'll treat yourself to an issue and keep it in your knitting library to look at and use for years to come.

Here's to your Happy Spirit, Happy Soul, and Happy Knitting!

BE A SMOOTHIE WITH EDGE-UCATION!

Bookmark and Share

Last week, I wrote about selvages. If selvages aren't your thing, you will want to try this tip to keep your knitted edges firm and smooth. Give it a try!

You can tighten your edges by remembering to do this - follow along ;)...

Knit your first stitch of your row the way you would normally, then on the second stitch you will insert your needle - STOP - pull firmly on the yarn which will tighten the previous stitch and continue to knit second stitch (and all following) in your usual way.

Simple, effective and with a little practice will become second nature.
NOW YOU CAN KNIT - SHARE- GOOOOOOOO! You're a smoothie!

EDGEY SECRET WEAPONS OF KNITOLOGY...

Have edges that roll? Need to join your edges but their too tight or lumpy and bulky? No Worries – Selvage Solutions Are on their way. Here are a couple of simple techniques to clean up those edges, making joining seams easier, and take the frustration out of your knitting project and placing you on the road to knitting nirvana. YAY!

SLIP GARTER SELVAGE…this type of selvage creates a firm edge. Each of your selvage stitches will be slipped knitwise on one row and knitted on the next row.
It goes like this…

Slip 1, work to last stitch, K1 and Repeat this Row. So, in other words you Slip the first stitch, work in your pattern across the row and then Knit the last stitch.
Ok, moving on…more good stuff that sometimes is not mentioned to a new knitter right away.

SLIP STITCH SELVAGE – oh goodie – one of my favorite secret weapons of knitology!

Follow along as I walk you through it. This is a mega amazing way to create loops along the selvage so that you can easily pick up stitches and make a clean join – very neat and there's no bulk – which we love, right? You will have a clean, neat edges on both sides of your work with this technique.

Right side row - You slip 1 stitch knitwise, and work across your row in your pattern, then the last stitch is Knit (K1).
Wrong side row – Slip 1 stitch purlwise, work across your row in pattern stitch, purl 1 (P1)
Repeat these two rows.

Note: KNITWISE (as if to knit) stitch will twist a bit but that's ok
PURLWISE (as if to Purl) stitch will not twist

There are many more Selvage techniques to explore, but these are two to get you started. Invest in a knitting book which includes clear and concise information and pictures for new knitters. It will help you get off to a great start and if you are a long time knitter – you may find a few tricks you haven't learned yet – even better!

Time to clean up those edges, eliminate the bulk and enjoy your knitting. TADA...

KNIT IN STYLE WITH MARY CORRIGAN DESIGNS

Put your needles together for

This is the go to shop for bags, etc with fashion and creative flair.
Mary, an experienced interior designer and seamstress, brings her creativty and excellent skills to each of her designs. Who better than Mary to tell her story... so here it is in a nutshell and in her own words...

I found myself swimming in yards and yards of fabric; fabric memos, sample cuts, remnants. So…what to do with this stash? Why, sew handbags for my friends and family and create the most unique luggage tags imaginable! I have since left the design world and have taken over my college professor husband's office and transformed it into a great sewing studio.

Now isn't that a great way to handle a stash-a-roo?
You will fall in love with her scrappy key tags, tags, totes, and accessory cases....which are all fabulous items for knitting and crocheting.

I especially loved the Daisy Butter Tote which I loaded up with knitty goodness and hit the road with last weekend. I included one of her adorable accessory cases which was roomy and had a zipper to keep all of my stitch markers, needles, etc secure.

Each piece is well sewn and sturdy and made with great attention to detail...and my order came super quick! ;) There is something for everyone and a price that fits every budget. I especially like the monogrammed tags and accessory bags for gifts.

VISIT Mary Corrigan Designs for fun, fashion, and gifts for everyone on your list!
